Referrals for a Genetic Consultation

Many genetic disorders are not apparent at birth. Some develop during childhood, while others are not evident until adulthood. Genetics consultations are therefore appropriate for individuals of all ages. A list of classical indications for genetics referrals follows this section.

Geneticists have much to offer in the way of consultation for health care providers. Assistance with the evaluation and diagnosis of potential genetic conditions can be provided, as well as help with the ongoing management of known genetic disorders.

Genetics center personnel can provide advice about laboratory tests, family support groups, sources of subspecialty care, and the availability of educational, community, social service, and financial resources for persons with hereditary conditions.

Frequently, a visit with a genetic counselor is the simplest way to deal with extensive, involved questions a patient or family member may have. A geneticist may be able to put the risks in perspective or reassure a family that the disorder in question is not likely to be inherited or due to an environmental exposure.
